Which Animal Knows the Most Words?

When it comes to understanding words in English, the scope narrows significantly. While some animals can learn to associate specific sounds with objects or commands, their comprehension of English words is limited. However, certain species have shown remarkable language comprehension abilities.

Dogs, for instance, have been trained to recognize a substantial number of words, especially when it comes to commands and basic objects. They can understand verbal cues and respond accordingly. Similarly, some parrots have demonstrated the ability to learn and associate a significant vocabulary of English words with their corresponding meanings.

In terms of primates, great apes, such as chimpanzees and bonobos, have shown the ability to comprehend and use symbolic languages, including American Sign Language (ASL). They can learn hundreds of signs and use them to communicate with humans effectively.

While these animals exhibit impressive linguistic abilities, it's important to note that their understanding of English words may differ from human comprehension. Their grasp might be more limited, focusing primarily on specific commands, objects, or concepts associated with their training.
