Yesterday, Toby from Bimotal stopped by. He developed the Elevate drive unit as a bolt-on way to get more laps in on your favorite (non-electric) bike. Of course I wanted to do something ridiculous with it, so we turned my Marin Alpine Trail E2 into a two wheel drive beast, just for the fun of it. Why talk about it? Because it’s a wild and whimsical idea that Toby has turned into a thoughtfully engineered product that’s durable, powerful, and ridiculously fun. Up until recently Toby has been developing the Elevate unit as a one man show, all stemming from the desire to get more laps in on his favorite trail bike. It uses a special brake mount adapter and a rotor with an aluminum gear on the inside that meshes with the output gear of the drive unit. It’s intended for the rear of the bike, but as seen here can go on the front as well. Quick release means you can take it off and stick it in your pack when you’re not using it.
We built an all wheel drive ebike! #mtb #ebike #shorts #bikeshorts
