This trick can increase your dog’s balance and body awareness!

How I Taught My Dog 'Sit Pretty'

Step 1: put your dog in a sit, lure with a treat until paws comes off the ground mark and reward

Step 2: slow increase duration of the sit pretty, you use your arm to provide support

Step 3: fade the lure, do once with treat, pretend to grab another treat, mark and reward with other hand

Step 4: add cue by turning luring gesture into hand signal

Step 5: add verbal cue, say 'sit pretty' then give hand signal eventually removing the hand signal

‘Sit Pretty’ increases your dog’s balance and body awareness. It also builds your dog’s core muscles, protecting the spine from injury during dog sports, running, and playing fetch in the yard.

Also, most dogs do not have the muscles to be able to sit pretty without support at first. Practice with short sessions until your dog builds the balance and strength to hold the position.

Note: If your dog has any pre-existing injuries or is less than a year old, it's best to consult a veterinarian to determine if this trick is safe for them.
