Waylon Jones is perhaps the most misunderstood DC villain ever. He was born with a rare medical condition that caused scales to grow all over his body. Tragically, his mother died during childbirth, and his father abandoned him with his abusive, alcoholic aunt. She made him scrub off his scales every day.
As a child, he faced relentless bullying and rejection due to his appearance. However, amidst the hardships, he found solace in his friend Emma, and they quickly became best friends. One day, when a child went missing, Emma saw it as an exciting adventure for the two of them to go searching for him. But the childlike wonder quickly vanished when they discovered the kid's lifeless body. Suddenly, a monstrous crocodile attacked them, and Emma died in Waylon's arms.
Everyone presumed he was responsible for her death, leading him to spend the rest of his formative years in reform school. Throughout his life, Waylon was judged for his appearance, no matter what he did to prove he was not the monster people perceived him to be. This constant rejection eroded his humanity, leading him to accept that he was just an animal. Eventually, he would go on to fully embrace the persona of Killer Croc.
