That Tim Burton broke filmmaking traditions when it came to casting Gomez Addams for his new Netflix adaptation of The Addams Family? Typically, in Addams Family adaptations of years gone by, Gomes Addams, the father of Wednesday Addams, is portrayed as a handsome and dashing man. Previous actors who have occupied the role include, John Astin in the 1962 version, Raul Julia in the 1991 and 1995 movie adaptations, and Tim Curry in 1998’s The Addams Family Reunion. However, in the original New Yorker cartoon, Gomez Addams is portrayed as rather a portly individual. Director of Wednesday, Tim Burton, may have changed a few details from the story’s original cartoon for his most recent Netflix update, but he did stay true to the cartoon’s vision of Gomez. Burton cast Luiz Guzman in the role of Gomez and the actor has a lot more in common physically with the original cartoon than other actors who have previously played the role.
