On May 6, 2021, Officer Nelson observed a motorcycle traveling on the highway with no visible plate. He activated his lights and siren in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The rider continued driving for several minutes before finding a place along the roadway that he determined had adequate space to safely stop. Officer Nelson, after observing the man's behavior and knowing motorcyclists often flee, hit the bike's kill switch and took the keys from the ignition. The man became agitated and confronted the officer, leading to Officer Nelson drawing his taser and firing it at the man. This is video of those events.
The man was charged with felony obstruction, attempting to elude, and driving without a plate.
