Stephen was Calvin Candie's steadfastly loyal house slave and close companion (June 26, 1780 – May 7, 1859). He serves as Django Unchained's secondary antagonist. Stephen privately perceives himself as second only to the white guy with all his fellow black people under him because he is a senior house slave who is more respected than the others.
Stephen is a domestic slave who has fully embraced the racist mindset that allowed for slavery in the American South. Stephen enjoys a strange bond with Calvin Candie an older house slave. This interaction supports Stephen's prized belief that he is superior to field slaves.
