Attack on Crimean Bridge: Ukraine under pressure to show military success? | DW News

Two explosions have destroyed a section of the Kerch bridge. Russia claims the blast killed two civilians and brought down a section of the roadway connecting Russia to occupied Crimea.

When it was inaugurated, President Vladimir Putin led a convoy across to mark the event. The bridge is the most potent – and most hated – symbol of Russia's occupation of Crimea, the territory Moscow annexed illegally from Ukraine in 2014.

Now the bridge has been damaged for the second time in in ten months. That cuts the main supply route for Russian troops fighting in southern Ukraine. Another blow against Moscow's forces still reeling from a mutiny last month.

Kurt Volker is a former US Special Representative for Ukraine, and a former US Ambassador to NATO. We ask him: What’s weighs heavier here, the psychological impact or the military advantage?
