Saw Nibs Explained

Occasionally, you run across an antique hand saw with a strange “nib” near the toe  – a small protrusion or a bump on the back of the saw plate. What were these for? After a hundred years of electric craftsmanship, their purpose  has been lost to us. Nick dredges the answer up from a memory of his grandfather teaching him to use a hand saw.
