The helmets at the intro go by pretty fast so in case you missed them we have darth vader in sith red, R2-D2, Fennec shand, a TIE pilot, bo katan, IG-11, a scout trooper, and a mandalorian. In the past I said this last one was din, but [I was wrong]. You can see some scratches on the helmet that dosn;t match din’s. Also, each of the bad guys in the opening is red, the good guys are blue. So whoever this mystery mandalorian is, he’s a bad guy.
So welcome to the closest we’ll get to a beach episode of the mandalorian.
Doug: What;s a beach episode?
Well, as Screenrush’s Srinidhi Rao tells me, a beach episode is a TV trope, common in anime, where the cast spends the episode relaxing on a beach. Sometimes it's an excuse to see the cats in swimsuits, but it’s usually important for character building. When we see heroes with their guard down, they get closer to each other, and by extension the audience. IN a way, the Ultron after party is a beach episode that doens;t even take place on a beach [clip].
So this episode is very similar–and not just because they’re on a beach. I doesn;t do much to further the overall story of Din, Grogu, or the new republic. But it does give us a chase to see the heroes in a relaxing setting, as they contemplate their place in the world. Bo Katan is finding her way in the new covert, while grogu is reckoning with the trauma of his past.
So we open in the covert training, and Bo Katan is very much the protagonist of this episode. She is the first POV character we follow around, as she watches them all train. And it makes sense for her to be our POV character, because–like her–this is all new for us.
The mandalorians are all training in pretty typical combat we’ve seen before. There's a practice dummy on the shore. We see spears. Vobro blades like we saw din and paz sue on each other in chapter 3, dueling flame throwers, and then they’re all kind of hilariously shooting into the water for no reason. I mean, that’s not really the target practice that’s killing time.
In fact this scene with all of them training seems to mirror a similar scene in the clone wars, where Pre-Vizsla tours the mandalorian camp with a newly-revived Darth maul.
Now one thing that’s interesting about bo katan–she was a member of death watch. During the clone wars, the mandalorians were mostly pascificts, and they were led by her sister, Duchess satine. But Bo Katan was part of a group called death watch–they were violent armor-wearing mandalorians who lived on the same moon that din is from.
Death watch believed the traditional ways of the mandalorian–like wearing armor and combat and this group–the children of the watch–are an even more extreme cult who believe you should never remove your helmet at all. So Bo-Katan was trained to be a fighter, she’s familiar with these exercises and traditions. But It's still a bit of a culture shock for her. I would like to see a flashback explaining why she broke with ehr family and joined a terrorist group on the moon.
She did mention that her dad was a fighter, so maybe it was actually her sister Saine who was the one who broke from the family way and became a pacifist.

So while the mandalorian kids are training in their combat, it looks like grogu is doing jedi training, getting ready to move rocks with his mind. [last jedi, more than moving rocks]. But it turns out that they were actually crabs and that he was just being distracted by food. There’s a bit of parallel here to the main storyline. Both the flashback and present day story are about predators and prey. The clone troopers hunt grogu and the jedi, the bat creature hunts the mandalorians, and they end up hunting the creature.
And by the way, one of our writers, Dod Seitz, pointing out the monster seems like an homage to the kaiju Rodan.
Dod also pointed out the similarities to beowulf. Specifically, grenal’s mom interrupts a banquet, and then beowulf leads his people to the mother’s den to kill her.
