As night fell, authorities said the two earthquakes have claimed 2,600 lives across Turkey and Syria.

But no-one expects that will be the extent of the final grim outcome.

The epicentre of the first 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the Turkish city of Gaziantep at 4:17 this morning, local time.

A series of at least 20 strong aftershocks also collapsed hundreds of buildings in the region.

A second 7.6 magnitude quake struck around eight hours later.

In Syria, already devastated by war, hundreds were killed and trapped under rubble in the provinces of Hama, Aleppo and Latakia.

Tremors were felt as far away as Lebanon, Greece, Israel and Cyprus.
