The story begins and ends in Montreal. A writer looking for inspiration (Rafe Spall) overhears the legend of Pai Patel (Irrfan Khan). Pai's father (Adil Hussain) runs a zoo. As a result of this special life environment, Pai (Suraj Sharma) has his own view of faith and human nature. When Pai turns 17, his parents decide to emigrate to Canada to pursue a better life, and he must leave his first love behind. On the boat to Canada, they meet a cruel French chef (Gérard Depardieu). Late that night in the middle of the ocean, the storm that was so exciting for Pai becomes a catastrophe that engulfs the cargo ship in an instant.
